kuna yala (san blas)

Called the Polynesia of the Americas, the San Blas archipelago is one of the most beautiful and pristine coral reef archipelagos of the world, and we feel honored to be among the few sailing these waters of well protected Kuna territory. In fact, the Kunas are so protective of their land, they are now even limiting permission for sailboats to carry charter passengers around the islands. This is why now is the time to visit San Blas on the unique sailing experience of a private charter.

The San Blas islands belong to the Comarca de Kuna Yala, an indigenous reservation that has jurisdiction over the 340 islands in the archipelago, plus a stretch of 200 Km. of virgin rainforest. The Kuna Indians have pretty much been self-governed since 1925 and because they've hung tight to their native customs and traditions, they haven't exploited the land with industrial development. The Kunas are among the few tribes who’ve managed to preserve their culture closed to outsiders through the passage of time, and though this is rapidly changing, life on the islands is still reserved to the few Kuna families that live on them tending to coconut plantations.

The men spend their days fishing, free-diving or clearing brush; the women do the house-keeping and sowing of their timeless mola – a multi layered, skillfully sown cloth depicting sometimes abstract, sometimes real visions and dreams of the Kuna women. The vibrant colors of the Kunas blend in with those of the landscape, and one can’t help but marvel at the sight of the perfect symbiosis formed by a beautifully simple people in a simply beautiful place.
